Easter and Kids

I wonder all the time about the source of chocolate addiction. It is amazing how much teething information we get as parents and how little we get about the nature of sweets. It is easy to see how it starts, this time of year is obvious. Kids are given huge chocolate Easter eggs by grand parents who enjoy the initial quiet of a blissed out baby eating something sweet, and then quickly retreat as the sugar rush makes them into monsters. The thing that I am wondering about, however, is if this type of indulgence in sweets will make the child prone to obesity later in life and less likely to par take of a healthy and balanced life style. I was speaking to a friend of mine who has two very slim daughters and she said that neither of them had eaten sweets until they were three, but now they were completely obsessed. In the United States, where there is an epidemic of child hood obesity you are more likely to see kids with sweet fizzy drinks and packets of crisps than with chocolates and sweets. What am I getting at? Well, perhaps it is not necessarily the sweets that are the problem, but the products that contain hidden sugars, fats and salts. When you eat chocolate, you know it is an indulgence, but a coca cola is packed with calories and people think that it is a drink. My suggestion for healthy choices at Easter? Buy high quality chocolate and eat in moderation.
