How chocolate saved my life
Stop, just stop: this isn’t a blog entry about how a massive bar of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk fell from the sky just in time, preventing me from being hit by a truck. Nor is this a blog post about how my life was saved by the medicinal properties of an Aero (though it would not surprise me…ah, how I love my Aero’s…).
What it is, though, is the tale of how chocolate saved my senses…
I work at a red diesel plant. I won’t bore you with the nitty-gritty of it all, but I will say that there is not a second in my day when I can’t either smell diesel or taste diesel. This can be a problem, because when you go home you find that your food tastes of diesel, even though it couldn’t be further from the truth (please, no jokes about your wife’s cooking tasting of diesel…).
try different kinds of gum to open up your nose and mouth first…
This used to dominate my life. But then, one day out of the blue, I found a cure for my problem. It’s no exaggeration to say that ever since then my quality of life has improved dramatically!
But I need to set one thing straight; actually, I didn’t discover this trick – my sister did. One day she just said to me “You really should chew gum and then eat chocolate, that’ll sort you out.”
I have never listened to my sister, but as soon as I tried her technique I discovered that she was right! I could taste things without diesel fumes again! It was at this point that I said, angrily, “why didn’t you tell me before?”
She just stared at me and that, to be honest, said it all. She was totally fair to do that as well.
There’s only one problem with all this, of course…and that’s the issue of what happens if you make the mistake of forgetting your chocolate or gum on the way to work. If that happens you know that the next eight to ten hours will be dominated by the stench of fumes. But still, one day every now and again is a hell of a lot better than a 24/7 nightmare, right?
(Note: try different kinds of gum to open up your nose and mouth first. I’d suggest trying dark chocolate as well if you want a big hit, and anything with mint in is obviously a winner! There are tons to try out so be sure to do some experimenting!)
